Cricket World Cup in Jamaica - Debate

Moot:Be it resolved that World Cup Cricket 2007 will bring more harm than good to the Caribbean.

Proposing
1. The World Cup Cricket will be held in Sabina Park some days and thus "schools within close proximity to Sabina Park are to be closed for five non-consecutive days while vehicular traffic along sections of South Camp Road will be impeded for seven non-consecutive days during the staging of the Cricket World Cup 2007" - Jamaica Gleaner. ID's will be needed for persons to enter areas that they live and worked in, thus creating a disturbance in daily life for these people.

1. All the attention put on the Caribbean and Jamaica in specific will bring publicity however the light on Jamaica can become negative. This can spark criticism from the rest of the world [expand]. In relation, a pathway for the speculation of our government will be created and our government might come under pressure, especially under the new presidency.

1. The number of visitors that will be coming into Jamaica will result in many inconveniences. The country will become congested in a sense that there will be many people driving on the roads, resulting in more traffic. The increased number of people will also naturally result in more pollution of the land and water.

1. Already much of the economy's money (including tax payers' money) has been spent on developing roads and public facilities to impress our visitors. While this is probably good for the country because it has inspired long needed construction, it may not be the best use of money at this time. The money will be spent on improving sports facilities, rather than much needed improvements to schools, hospitals and public infrastructure not directly related to tourism. The budget is being far stretched to facilitate the event.

1. The privacy of Jamaican citizens will most likely become exploited. Tourists tend to take a lot of pictures and media of what they take to be "island life", this can be irritating to some people and is not part of any contract.

1. It can be said that employment is created with our new stadium and facilities however, the jobs created are not careers and therefore can be classified as "seasonal jobs". These jobs will provide temporary relief for the unemployed citizens of the economy but will, however lead to more
